  • Mr. Carlson is originally from Connecticut and spent summers on Southport Island as a child. He currently lives in Wiscasset with his family and enjoys hiking, climbing, reading, and baseball. Mr. Carlson earned his masters degree in chemistry from the Univ. of California, Berkeley. He obtained his BS in Forestry and Chemistry from The Univ. of Maine, Orono.

  • Mrs. Hersom was raised in Gouldsboro, Maine and received her B.S. degree in Physical Education, Health and Recreation at UMPI with endorsements in Life Science and Special Education. (USM, UMFK) She just received her Master's Degree in education from UMO in May of 2002. She enjoys cooking, athletics and gardening and her travels have taken her to the Bahamas, Nebraska, South Carolina, Florida and Pennsylvania.
  • Mrs. Hersom teaches freshman Earth Systems Science and Applied Biology, Theoretical Biology, Advanced Biology, and Anatomy and Physiology. Special projects which are included in her curriculum are garden development at BRHS, Tree identification through Boothbay Region Land Trust, and Student-Scientist Work Studies through Bigelow Lab. Mrs. Hersom uses Prentice Hall Texts including Biology, by Neal Campbell, Fundamental of Anatomy and Physiology, by Fredrick Martini, and Biology, by Miller and Levine. Local Common Assessment Team 2004, and State Maine Learning Results Revision Team 2005.



  • Mrs. Lauren Harkins

  • Mrs. Harkins received her B.A. in Biology from Colby College in 1997. She worked in Boston at the Boston Biomedical Research Institute for 3 years in the cancer research department before moving to Portland to join the Maine Medical Center Research Institute's Center for Molecular Medicine. Her work with transgenic mice was published in 2008 in Developmental Biology.
  • Mrs. Harkins is originally from Southport Island and moved back to the area 5 years ago with her husband and two children.
  • She teaches Ecology/ Environmental Science, Freshmen Science, Chemistry and coaches varsity softball.
  • Outside of school, she enjoys Ultimate Frisbee, swimming, running, reading, and hanging out with her family.
